The rules in one minute
Every word is encoded by shifting the alphabet a fixed number of letters: a shift of 3 turns A into D, B into E, and so on (wrapping around at the end). The same shift applies to every letter on the sheet, and the shift is never changed mid-puzzle. Your job is to write the real words under the coded ones. With clues on, each word has a hint; with clues off, you crack it from the patterns alone.
How to read the grid

The easiest way to picture the cipher is to write the alphabet twice in a row — once normal, once shifted — and slide one row against the other until the coded letters line up with real words.
1. Guess a word from its clue and find the shift
With clues on, this is the fastest route. Suppose the clue says "a big cat" and the coded word is JGUVI. Try the obvious answer, TIGER, and line it up: J→T, G→I, U→G, V→E, I→R. That's a shift of 10 — and now you can decode every other word on the sheet with the same shift. One confident guess is the whole puzzle unlocked.
2. Try the common shifts
No clues? Write the alphabet twice and slide it. Test the likely shifts — 1, 3, 5, 10 and 13 are the classics — against the shortest coded words. A three-letter coded word that becomes THE, AND, YOU or ONE under a particular shift has almost certainly revealed the key. Once one word fits, apply that shift to the rest.
3. Start with the short words
Short coded words are the most constrained and the fastest to identify. A one-letter word can only be A or I; two-letter words are a tiny pool (OF, TO, IN, IS, IT, ON, WE, HE, BE, AS, AT, OR). Match the short words against the shifted alphabet and the shift usually announces itself.
4. Look for repeated letters and patterns
The cipher preserves letter patterns: a word with a doubled letter (like LL in SHELL) stays doubled in the code, and a word with a repeated letter (like E in EVERY) keeps that repetition. A coded word shaped XXY — like NNG — is almost certainly a real word with the same shape, which narrows the possibilities dramatically.
5. Remember the letter frequencies
In ordinary English, E is the most common letter, followed by T, A, O, I, N and S. If a coded word is full of the same letter, it's probably standing in for one of those frequent letters. Combine frequency with the theme and the word shapes, and the shift falls out quickly.
6. Avoid the classic mistakes
Three errors trip up beginners. First, mixing up the direction — a shift of 3 encodes A as D, but decodes D back to A; always decode in the opposite direction from the encoding. Second, assuming a letter maps to itself; in a Caesar cipher no letter stays put. Third, changing the shift partway through — it's fixed for the whole sheet, so if one word suddenly stops making sense, check your arithmetic instead.
