How to use the word fill-in maker
A word fill-in (also called a word fit or fill-it-in puzzle) works like a crossword without clues: the grid shows slots of different lengths, and your job is to fit the listed words into the right slots. The word list groups words by length, and each word shows the number of its slot. Overlapping letters give you hints as you go.
- Difficulty: Easy uses short words on a small grid. Medium mixes short and mid-length words. Hard uses longer words on a bigger, denser grid.
- Solving: Type letters straight into the grid and use “Check” to highlight wrong entries in red — or print a blank puzzle to solve on paper.
- Printing: Choose 1 or 2 puzzles per page, then click “Print / PDF” for clean puzzle pages or “Print Answers” for the completed grids. In the print dialog choose “Save as PDF” to download a file.
- Categories: Animals, Food & Drink, Sports, Countries, Jobs and Nature. Every puzzle is generated fresh, so you can make unlimited puzzles.
The rules of word fill-in
- The grid is made of white slots and solid black cells. A slot is a run of connected white squares, and it runs either across (left to right) or down (top to bottom).
- Every word you need is printed in the word list, grouped by how many letters it has, and each word shows the number of its slot.
- Each word fits exactly one slot, and every slot holds exactly one word. When you’re done, the grid is completely filled and the word list is empty.
- Match a word to a slot by its length and its number: the number on a word is printed at the start of its slot in the grid.
- Where an across slot and a down slot cross, they share a cell — so the letter you place has to work for both words. These crossing letters are your main hints.
- There are no clues to decode. Everything you need to solve the puzzle is in the word list itself.
