How to Solve Skyscrapers: Rules, Tips and Strategies for Beginners
Skyscrapers is the skyline logic puzzle: place building heights 1 to N in the grid so every row and every column has each height exactly once, and the numbers around the edge say how many buildings are visible from that side — because taller buildings hide the shorter ones behind them. The edge clues read like a city skyline, and once you learn what each clue number means, the buildings place themselves. Here's how it works and how to get good at it fast.
The rules in one minute
Place a building of height 1 to N in every cell, where N is the grid size (4, 5 or 6 on our generator). Every row and every column must contain each height 1 to N exactly once. Each clue around the border gives the number of buildings visible from that side: the first building is always visible, and every taller building hides the shorter ones behind it. How visibility works
Stand at the edge and look across the row or column. The first building is always visible. From then on, a building is only visible if it is taller than every building in front of it. Heights 2, 4, 1, 3 show two buildings: the 2, then the 4 (the 1 and 3 are hidden behind the 4). The same line from the other end — 3, 1, 4, 2 — shows three. 1. A clue of 1 pins the tallest building at the edge
If a clue is 1, only one building is visible — and the first building is always visible, so the tallest building of all (height N) must be sitting right in the first cell of that row or column. Place N there immediately. This is the single most powerful move in skyscrapers, and it appears in almost every puzzle.
2. A clue of N means the line is strictly increasing
If a clue is N, every building in the line is visible, which can only happen if the heights rise in perfect order: 1, 2, 3, 4 … N from that side. Fill the whole line in order without hesitation. When you see a clue of N you've effectively solved that row or column.
3. A clue of N − 1 puts the tallest building second
If only one building is hidden, it must be hiding behind the tallest: the first cell holds height 1 (or something small) and the second cell holds height N. The rest of the line is then forced into increasing order after it. It's a slightly subtler version of rule 1, and it unlocks a lot of medium puzzles.
4. Use the rows and columns like sudoku
Every row and column is a complete set of heights 1 to N. Once you know some of the heights in a line, the missing ones are simply the leftovers — and the edge clues decide their order. This is where the puzzle becomes a satisfying two-step: the clues set the range and order, the row-and-column rule fills the gaps.
5. Pencil in the candidate heights
In each cell, jot the heights its row and column still allow, then apply the clues on both ends of its line. A cell that must be visible from both sides can't hold a small height; a cell that must be hidden from a side with a small clue can't hold a tall one. Short candidate lists plus the edge clues resolve most cells without any guessing.
6. Avoid the classic mistakes
Three errors trip up beginners. First, forgetting which side the clue reads from — the same row shows different skyline counts from opposite ends, so always check the clue's position. Second, placing the tallest building in the first cell of a clue-1 line on the wrong edge. Third, repeating a height in a row or column while chasing the clues. Check each line from both ends when you finish, and if you're stuck, the answer key shows exactly how the skyline was meant to read.
